The General is was squat art in Paris in the district of Belleville in the XIX th arrondissement of Paris. The art project was subsequently expanded on two separate sites (and legal) in Sèvres and in the 11th arrondissement of Paris.

Short history of the original building rue du Général Lassalle.

The name "The General" refers to the street where was the building where the project was born. Built in the interwar period , the building of four floors and8,000 m 2 , located at 10, 12 and 14 of the rue du General Lasalle in Paris, was originally a shoe factory. During World War II , authorities spolièrent its own well, of Jewish origin, and deported to the most extermination camps workers, shoemakers, themselves Jewish. Upon release, the building passed to the HeritageDepartment of Education who transformed it into center for training its inspectors and then archive center. From 1995 to 2005, the premises were left unoccupied.


In February 2005, a group of ten artists invested these abandoned places for ten years to install their workshops. They were soon joined by hundreds of other creators in search of space.

The General is primarily a place dedicated to work and creation; the most varied disciplines are developed are: visual arts, theater, citizen science, literature, dance, video, film, music, photography, politics, ... The General was also a venue: exhibition galleries and rooms theatrical performances, audiovisual and music are occasionally open to the public.

In April 2007, part of the General artists is relocated by the Ministry of Culture for a period of 18 months (extended one year) at 6, Grande Rue Sèvres Manufactory on the site which becomes in the General Manufacture, a residence, a laboratory of artistic creation,

General, movement demanding artistic practices and community life as two fundamental and complementary modalities of culture, is relocated by the city of Paris at 14 avenue Parmentier in the 11th arrondissement, in a room used for electricity distribution, Voltaire substation.

The street building General Lasalle was closed September 6, 2007 after the expulsion of its last occupants by the police. He is now dedicated to a psychiatric hospital unit "White House - nineteenth Lasalle."

Voltaire cinema future at 14 avenue Parmentier

At the end of the architectural competition Reinventing Paris , the project operator David Henochsberg , president of the independent network Star Cinema ( Star Saint-Germain-des-Prés , the Balzacand the Star Lilas ), won the call for offers to transform the electrical substation. The project has five rooms for a total of 507 seats , space for live performances, a restaurant, a terrace bar, the offices of the Society of Film Directors , those of the Directors' Fortnight and the Middle Film Festival Brive 1 , 2 . The Vile of Paris is committed to ensuring the sustainability of artistic and cultural project of the General 1 .
